A team led by
Matthias Nahrendorf, MD, PhD,
Richard Moerschner Endowed MGH Research Institute Chair in Men's Health and
Weissman Family MGH Research Scholar 2014-2019, recently published a study showing that cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes remodeling of the bone marrow’s vascular niche, leading to altered functioning and an overproduction of white blood cells.
These additional white blood cells increase inflammation in the body and further increase the risk of negative CVD outcomes. New strategies to reduce white blood cell population could improve outcomes in CVD patients, Nahrendorf and colleagues write.
